SPIAGGIA

Venue Phone: 312-280-2750

Venue Website: www.s121aggiarestaurant.com/

Address: 980 N. Michigan Ave., 2nd Floor, Chicago, Il, 60611

With a menu made almost entirely from scratch (pasta included), the difference in taste is evident when stacked against competitors. Seafood options stand out, as do the tasting menus (five courses for $105, eight courses for $165, plus optional wine pairings). The a la carte menu might present such inspirations as octopus with sunchoke, blood orange, treviso and jalaperio to start, continuing with risotto alla Milaneseand dry-aged porterhouse with truffle hollandaise, turnip and onion jam. Accordingly, the array of cheeses is vast. Gold leaf adorns a n indulgent Italian-style opera torte with salted caramel gelato. The wine list offers unique Italian selections rarely seen in Chicago. The tab is a small price to pay, we say, for the view from the tiered dining room with its panoramas of Oak Street Beach and the lake. Tickets are available via the Tock reservation system.

Monteverde+James+Beard+3+.jpg

MONTEVERDE RESTAURANT & PASTIFICIO

Venue Phone: 312-888-3041

Venue Website: http://monteverdechicago.com/

Address: 1020 W. Madison St., Chicago, Il, 60607

Chef Sarah Grueneberg somehow makes Italian food new again, striking out on her own for the first time after appearing on “Top Chef’ and leading the kitchen at Spiaggia.  Monteverde’s wooden, dimly-lit interior is made more homey by its location on Madison, a couple blocks south of the West Loop’s busier “restaurant row.” She injects her German heritage into the menu with dishes like Oma’s green mountain salad and stuffed cabbage with porcini bolognese and crispy polenta, a robust vegetarian option. Her dedication to pasta both traditional (tipica) and new (atipica) is apparent. This is the freshest pasta in the city and most dishes are made to order. Sit at the butcher-block bar for the best view of the action while snacking on prosciutto butter toast. Watch as staff on the pastificio line meticulously fill and fold tortelloni, soon to be sauteed in brown butter and drenched in Parmesan fonduta. The arrabbiata is another must, listed under the pasta atipica section. Wok- fried noodles balance heat, char and blistered cherry tomatoes in an umami explosion topped with juicy head-on prawns. The wine list includes fairly priced gems from Alto Adige and Piedmont, with a nice by-the-glass selection. Save room for Black Forest ice cream cake or chocolate chip meringue “forgotten” cookies, a sweet end to a meal you certainly won’t forget any time soon.

GIRL & THE GOAT

Venue Phone: 312-492-6262

Venue Website: https://girlandthegoat.com/

Address: 809 W. Randolph St., Chicago, Illinois, 60607

Chef Stephanie Izard — winner of the fourth season of “Top Chef’ — partnered with Boka Restaura nt Group’s Rob Katz and Kevin Boehm (GT Fish & Oyster, Salena, The J. Parker, etc.) on this fashionably unassuming West Loop eatery. Rustic details — including brick and  burlap colored walls, vintage ceramic tiles and Edison light bulbs — meet a frequently changing, sharable menu that’s categorized by meat, fish and vegetable dishes; most all reveal unexpected twists and turns. Start with the warm marinated olives, chickpea fritters, kohlrabi salad or escargot ravioli with bacon and tamarind sauce. The restaurant’s namesake, too, appears in ways you may not expect. For example, there’s the goat carpaccio with smoked trout roe and olive-maple vinaigrette.Desserts are every bit as off-kilter-tasty, so grab a seat next to the kitchen line to watch the frenetic action, and indulge in chocolate cake with shiitake gelato. You’ll find local beers on draft, as well as craft cocktaiIs and a short list of wines by the glass
